Country House

If you live in a house in the countryside, the chances are that you are not the first people to live in it. More often than not, country homes have been there for centuries and are therefore part of England’s heritage.

Whether it is a thatched cottage or a stately home, a house in the countryside can come with all sorts of idiosyncrasies – period features, old beams, windows and fireplaces – and so getting to know the colour schemes that will work can take time. Our Country Home collection features combinations designed to complement these wonderful period properties.

Charcoal and Guinea Fowl

With Susie’s love of colour at the forefront of most of our collections, we sometimes get asked for combinations to suit more muted schemes. In this combination, we began to build things around our grey Tartan Shetland throw, accented by Charcoal Velvets and Guinea Fowls and delicate muted linens. It was all going so well as a calm, sophisticated yet muted scheme – and then someone popped in a couple of Sail Red Mika cushions that made the whole thing go Pop! It seems we just can’t help ourselves when it comes to splashes of colour...

Rich and Resonant

For cosy cottages or grand houses, tiny rooms or large spaces, country houses can benefit from stronger, more resonant palettes of rich russets and greens. Here we have chosen our fabulous embroidered Pheasant feature cushion, counterbalanced by Olive Green and Red Earth Megha for a look that inspires warmth and elegance alike.

Floral frolics

These bright, inviting hues of summer green and dusky pink take their lead from our centrepiece cushion in Foxglove embroidered linen. We have used our Damson Sage Shetland Throw and Damons Velvet cushions, as another opportunity to echo these colours. Don’t be afraid to let your cushion combinations echo colours used elsewhere in the room (see our Red Shalini curtains in the background!).

Sophisticated Splendour

At the heart of the English Country House aesthetic is an appetite for the unusual. It is always the quirky flourishes that stand out and make a home feel special. This sofa draws on the time-honoured tradition of rich damsons and greens as colours of opulent splendour, emphasised by our Dark Green Velvet cushions and Burgundy silks. Our eye-catching Charcoal Indian Wedding cushion serves as a conversation piece and we’ve added a touch of rustic Megha in dusky mauve to ensure the scheme stays homely and grounded.

Bold and Playful

A pink sofa does wonders for bringing dark corner spaces into full bloom. Working with bold colours and textured fabric combinations can create a characterful and quirky design scheme. Here our Rose Silk Taffeta and Marine Blue Velvet cushions are paired with our Pink Green Bloomsbury Linen to create a scheme that is bursting with vibrance and colour.

Timeless Charm

Using the English Country House aesthetic as our muse, we have created a scheme that is elegant, traditional yet welcoming. This combination works well in rooms with period architectural features – an ornate fireplace, for example. A rich blend of rustic colours, alongside richly textured kilim additions bring together a scheme that honours the past and embrace the future. The rug is an essential for any sofa in a busy room – hiding all manner of dog and child-related sins!
